Sambhota Tibetan School, Mundgod

STS Mundgod, Camp 3 is formerly CST Mundgod which was founded in the year 1969 by Mysore Resettlement and Development Agency (MYRADA), Karnataka. It had undertaken the responsibility of rehabilitating Tibetan Refugees in South India. The school was handed over to far sighted and skill management; Central Tibetan Schools Administration (CTSA) New Delhi, an autonomous body under Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), government of India in conjunction with the Department of Education (DOE) CTA, Dharamsala in the year 1970.

Under the blessing of foresighted His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the kind consent of, the then Prime minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, this school was started with a vision to provide modern education to Tibetan children while preserving & promoting Tibetan culture and identity.

After a span of 50 years of its establishment, this school has been handed over from CTSA, Delhi to STSS, Dharamsala and the name of Central School for Tibetans Mundgod was changed to Sambhota Tibetan School Mundgod on 5th May 2018.
This small middle school in the beginning has emerged today as one of the biggest Senior Secondary Schools in Tibetan Community offering the widest range of course streams. This is the one and only Tibetan school which provide facilities for four streams in classes XIth and XIIth standard : Arts, Commerce, Science and Vocational or also popularly called as Life Skill by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The Vocational stream run by the school had proved useful in meeting the accounting and clerical manpower requirement of the various community establishments. However, the changing job scenario in the Tibetan exile community has necessitated the need for revision of existing vocational programmes. Under the aegis of DOE Dharamsala, Tibetan language is being taught to the vocational students as an additional subject. The vocational students after passing class XII can either efficiently go for job or join further studies like BA, B.Com, BBA, BBM, Hotel management, BCA, Computer hard ware & net working, Secretary, airhostess, etc. and many diploma including lab technician, computer, front office, chef, hair dresser, beauty parlour etc.

This school is 50 Kms away from Hubli City and 7 Kms from Mundgod town. Ideally located in the very heart of the Tibetan Settlement covering an area of 10.53 acres, in close proximity to the settlement office, hospitals, shopping complex and taxi & auto stand. A lush green expanse of open paddy fields surrounds the school campus. On both sides of the school, at close range, lies the picturesque view of the sprawling Gaden and Drepung Monastic University Complexes, resplendent in its imposing traditional Tibetan architectural splendour. This gives a serene charm to the school environment. The daily converging to school from the nine Tibetan Camps is being arranged by the settlement office which operates two buses.

This school has also residential facilities for senior secondary level students coming from neighbouring Tibetan settlement feeder schools such as Kollegal, Hunsur, Bylakuppee and far-flung areas such as Arunachal, Himachal, Ladakh and Nepal.
This main school itself has 401 lovely students and 46 devoted & dedicated staff members who have been working efficiently under the leadership of the present Principal Mr. Sangpo Rinzin. The school has one Primary School block attached to the main school and another branch primary school along the main road, small bridge side, between camp 3 & Gaden Monastery, and popularly known as ‘Bridge school’ having around 64 energetic students and 8 vibrant staff including the experienced headmistress Mrs Phurbu Dolkar. Under this, there are six more pre-primary and six nursery schools located in six different Tibetan camps (camp no. 1,2,3,4,5 & 9) having a total of 81 beautiful students and 12 dedicated staff .At the local level, the school is enjoying warm patronage of the settlement officer who is the chairman of the local Advisory committee/PTA and Parents’ representatives from the 9 camps who also help the school administration in various school activities, including preparing mid day meals to the day scholars.

After the handing over of the school, with the proper guidance & continuous supports from STSS and DOE, the school could provide many special educational modern facilities such as ITC for five classes from class VI to X, new science Centre, Multi Skills room with all the updated facilities, Junior and Senior Computer rooms with 50 computers (25 new & 25 old computers), Library with new setting having 6000 books, new counselling cell room with novel facilities, inclusive infrastructure for special students, ALLEN room with DOE special expert who prepare students after & before the school for JEE & NEET exams.

The school is equipped with other facilities like smart classes, Exams room, Adolescent room and eco club room, four science laboratories – Chemistry, physics, biology and junior science laboratory, Tibetan language room, music and dance room, art & craft room, scout and guide room, maths lab room and open maths lab, social studies room, ABL room, SUPW and tailoring room etc. We have two staff rooms each for primary and senior section, staff quarters for 33 staff members. Moreover, there is a small school canteen and dispensary just behind the senior class block. There are two open aired multipurpose halls, each for senior and primary block students and about 11 toilet blocks in the campus.

While imparting education, the school strive towards grooming overall growth of child personalities and more emphasis is given for providing congenial atmosphere in creating good human being with self reliance, self discipline and innovation. In short, it is a great learning centre for each and every one in developing a responsible world citizen in general and building future seeds of Tibet in particular.
