Sambhota Tibetan School, Darjeeling
On the arrival to India in 1959, the main concern Of H.H. Dalai Lama and government in exile was the education of Tibetan children. There were about 5,000 children below the age of 16 in 1959. Therefore, the education of the children received top priority in his talk with the then Prime Minister of India, Jawharlal Nehru in 1960. Under the stewardship of Late Pandit Jawharlal Nehru, a special education scheme was set up for Tibetan children. To achieve the objectives, the Tibetan schools society was set up in 1961 and in 1970, the society was retained at CTSA and the Chairmanship of the governing body was given to Joint Secretary in Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India.
The school was set up in 1961, a year after Mussoorie had been opened. At the initial stage the school was started in N.B. M. R Building and other rented buildings namely Digapati, Rai Villa and Kailash.
The First Principal of the school Mr. Lhawang Thundup Pulger had started the school with 30 students and 5 teachers in 1961. The first batch of students appeared for All India Higher Secondary Examination with 11 students and all passed with flying colours. The school has consistently maintained high academic standards with various co curricular activities with the sole aim of holistic development of the students.
It is noteworthy to mention that the special emphasis of the School has been preservation of Tibetan language, culture and tradition since its inception. The school was transferred to Sambhota Tibetan
Schools Society under CTA Dharamasla on 24th December 2021. The school has started its new journey with the aim of implementing education which would foster a holistic development of the students.
