WOENANG SCHOOL was opened on 15th March 1974 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The ceremony was presided over by Shri Mallikarjuna Swamy, the Honourable Minister for Education, Karnataka State. The school was built with funds provided by The Board of Trustees for the Common Project of the European Refugee Campaign.
Initially the School was set up by one of the non-governmental agencies called MYRADA in the year 1975. After the winding up of MYRADA project in Tibetan Rabgayling Settlement, the school was taken over by the Central Tibetan Schools Administration, Delhi, with effect from 02-02-1976. It was upgraded as secondary school later on.
The Central school for Tibetans, Gurupura was under the leadership of Central Tibetan Schools Administration (CTSA), the Headquarters, was set up as an autonomous organization by a resolution of the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1961 and was registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The main objectives of the Administration are to run, manage and assist institutions for the education of Tibetan Children in India. The Administration runs seventy seven schools and this is one of them.
The Central School for Tibetans is affiliated to CBSE Delhi and follow10+2 system of education. They prepare students for the All India Secondary School examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. The medium of instruction at primary level is Tibetan whereas the medium of instruction from class VI onwards is English. The school follows the syllabi prepared by NCERT except in the case of Tibetan language which is designed by the Central Tibetan Administration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dharamsala.
After managing the Tibetan schools for over 50 years a need was felt to let the Tibetans run their own schools and hence through a cabinet note in 2013 it was decided to hand over the management of the school to DoE/Sambhota Tibetan School, Society. In the third phase of transfer the Govt. of India issued a transfer order of 3 Senior Secondary and 5 Secondary schools to Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society in May 2018, which includes our school as well. Since, taken over from Sambhota we are able to achieve and fulfill the need of our School requirement by providing better facility, because of that the functioning of School is very much effective..
