Gangkyi Petoen School

Gangkyi Petoen School was established in the year 1975 by Ama Jetsun Pema to cater to the educational needs of the children of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) staff. When it first began its operation there were 25 children from LKG to UKG with two teachers and an ayah.

In the year 1978, DoE took over the administration of the school and named it as Gangkyi Day School. They later upgraded the school to Class I and gradually by 1984 the school was upgraded to Class V level. Unfortunately, the number of students dwindled and the administration was forced to downgrade the school to Class II level in the following year.

In the year 1999, the administration of the school was handed over to the Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society by DoE in order to improve the educational standard of the school. The school was re-named as Sambhota Tibetan School Gangkyi and class III was added to the school. The system of LKG and UKG in the pre-primary section was also changed to Stage I, II and III.

In the year 2011, the school was merged with Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen School in Lower Dharamsala and re-named as Sambhota Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen School Gangkyi. The school was also upgraded to Class V level thus catering to the educational needs of the students from Stage I to Class V. Over the years the number of students seeking admission increased a lot due to the successful implementation of the Basic Education Policy for Tibetans in Exile in the school. By the year 2017 the school became over- crowded and hence it was decided to shift Class IV and V to Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen School in Lower Dharamsala.
