Sherab Gatsel Lobling
It is a school for new-arrival Tibetan young men and women who are not eligible to join normal school as most of them have already crossed 18 years of age. Most of them have not got an opportunity to go to school in Tibet. It facilitates them in learning English and Tibetan language as well as vocational skills. Apart from teaching basic Tibetan and English language, spiritual and cultural education is also given for their holistic growth and development.
The school is located at Manji (Khanyara Road), which is about 6 kilometers from Dharamsala bus stand. It was formally started on 1st April, 1993 by the Tibetan Reception Centre, Dharamsala with 103 young men and women. The school term was increased from 2 years to 3 years in 1998. H.H. the Dalai Lama visited the school the same year, and it was given the name SHERAB GATSEL LOBLING. Since the year 2000, the students have been allowed to stay in the school for five years. The Tibetan Reception Centre handed over the school to the DOE in 2002; the DOE, in turn, handed over the school administration to Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society on January 3, 2011.
As per the direction of Kashag, this administration has improved the quality of learning by adding new courses such as Food-craft, Computer diploma courses and Open schooling till +2 level, Correspondence courses from College of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah and their stay is also extended as per the need of the courses. This development comes into effect from May 2013. Till date, 7502 young men and women have availed education facilities provided by the school.
