Sambhota Tibetan School, Manali

The school is picturesquely located on the bank of River Beas at Rangri, 4 km away from Manali town in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. It began in the year 1962 as an adhoc nursery school with 20 children and a teacher in a tent set up by Tibetan road construction workers near the town at Nyingma Monastery. Later, as the number of children began to increase, the school was shifted to wooden rooms with temporary tinned roof at Buda Camp built with the money collected by the parents. The school then had classes from kindergarten to grade two.

In 1978, the Department of Education, CTA took charge of the school at the request of the parents. Subsequently, a headmaster and necessary teaching staff were appointed and gradually the school was upgraded to the middle school level, with classes up to eighth grade. The school also began to receive grant in-aid from the Government of India to cover cost of textbooks, mid-day meals, stationeries and the salary of one teacher.

In 1994, the school was temporarily shifted to a hotel under construction near Gurudwara, Manali for a period of only one year as the old school at Buda camp was washed away by the 1993 floods and the new site provided by the Himachal Pradesh State Government at the time was under construction. Thereafter in the year 1995 it was relocated to the present site of the school building. A new school complex with the capacity of around 250 students and staff accommodations on the top floor was built by the Department of Education, and formally inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama on 4th July, 1996.

In 1999, the school was placed under the administration of the newly formed Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society, an autonomous body under the Department of Education, CTA.
In 2002, it was downgraded to a primary school, with the establishment of a new boarding middle school at Bhuntar the same year. At present the school has 61 children with 7 teaching and 6 non-teaching staff.

In the year 2006, like other schools under STSS, STS Manali adopted the implementation of the Basic Education Policy and also follows the grading system of evaluation. The school has a library, a sports room, dance and music room, activity room, a projector room, three Montessori classrooms, a hall etc. Tibetans residing in this valley earn their livelihood through petty sweater selling business in winter. So the Parent-Teacher Association has facilitated the parents for 4 months winter hostel for their children in the year 2011 with effect from September to December.

Most of the classrooms are integrated for shared learning experiences among the students, and the school environment fosters the children in such a way that they look to their teachers as their friends, philosophers and guide. Corporal punishment is prohibited in the school. The school receives full support and cooperation from the Parent-Teacher Association. A parent member is present daily in the school to help purchase groceries and assist the school cook in the kitchen.
